The people everywhere are speaking loud and clear. They are expressing their opinions about many issues. In United States two of the main issues are the anti-immigrant policies that are been discussed in the Senate, but also the protests against the war in Iraq.

Worldwide there have been demonstrations against the war in Iraq which continues to evolve around oil, money and power. Nevertheless the other issue that comes to the forefront it is the one related to water, money and power. It is very interesting that the equation is the same, only one of the factors changes.

Therefore we may affirm that nowadays the global power that controls issues that affect the common people in their native places is the same power that contracts military force to impose its will over the lives of many.

The immigrants in US have decided to come forth and show their numbers, but also all the financial sectors of the country have openly admitted that they cannot survive without the presence of the immigrants legal or undocumented.

The agro-industry, chambers of commerce, business and financing organizations are lobbying now in order to affect the discussion in the senate about the twelve million Undocumented people who are helping build the economy in this country.

Are the people who are dictating policies going to listen? Maybe they will, or maybe not. If we take as reference what happened in Indiana, we find that the legislators decided to sell the present and future of the state on doing business by leasing part of Indiana’s Toll Road to a foreign country. The great clamor from the Hoosiers that opposed this measure was overlooked.

For the last four years people in US and abroad have demonstrated against the war. Every year more and more people in the United States are against the war in Iraq. Some of them are threatening to not pay taxes, since they are used to finance the war. If this is done it could make a difference.

Thousands of young people in France are protesting an unfair labor policy against them. Most of the country has started to listen to them. The government was inclined to help the employers over that of the young employees. Now the entire country is participating in the issue.

I do not look at all these conflicts with pessimism. On the contrary, I think we should be very hopeful. It would be a tragedy if people continue to be out of the discussions due to ignorance or negligence, but I see people awakening everywhere. Once they find out that their lives are been directly impacted by the decisions of few, they get ready for action.

Agreed, it may look troublesome to have so much discontent in the world, but it is very healthy when everywhere people want to shake off the superpowers that think they are dumb or do not know what is good for them.

This is the best time! You only have to join in the dialogue and the action.

El pueblo en todo lugar está hablando claro y duro, y está expresando su opinión acerca de muchos asuntos. En los Estados Unidos dos de los puntos principales son las políticas anti-inmigrante que se debaten en el senado, pero también ha habido protestas contra la guerra en Irak.

Alrededor del mundo ha habido manifestaciones contra la guerra en Irak, la cual continúa girando en torno al petróleo, el dinero y el poder. Sin embargo, el otro asunto que pasa al frente es el relacionado con el agua, el dinero y el poder. Es muy interesante que la ecuación sigue siendo la misma, solo uno de los factores cambia.

Por lo tanto podemos afirmar que hoy en día los poderes globales controlan los asuntos que afectan a la gente común en sus lugares nativos y es el mismo poder que contrata la fuerza militar para imponer su voluntad sobre las vidas de muchos.

Los inmigrantes han decidido mostrarse en forma abierta en EU y mostrar su poder numérico; pero a su vez, todos los sectores financieros del país has admitido que no pueden sobrevivir sin la presencia de los inmigrantes legales o indocumentados.

La agro-industria, cámaras de comercio, negocios e instituciones financieras están cabildeando ahora a fin de afectar las discusiones del senado en torno a doce millones de indocumentados que están ayudando a construir la economía en este país.

Y los que están creando las políticas, están escuchando? Tal vez, o tal vez no. Si tomamos como referencia lo que acaba de ocurrir en Indiana, encontramos que los legisladores decidieron vender el presente y futuro del estado rentando parte del “Indiana Toll Road”, a una compañía extranjera. El clamor de la gente de Indiana que se oponía a este negocio, fue ignorado.

Durante los últimos cuatro años, tanto en EU como en el exterior ha habido múltiples demostraciones en contra de la Guerra en Irak. Ultimamente en Estados Unidos algunos han amenazado con no pagar impuestos, ya que estos son usados para financiar la guerra. Si esto se hiciera, podría marcar una diferencia.

También en Francia miles de jóvenes están protestando las políticas laborales injustas en su contra. El gobierno se inclinó a favor de los empleadores y en contra de los jóvenes empleados. La mayoría del país ha empezado a escuchar y todo el país está participando en el asunto.

No veo todos estos conflictos con pesimismo; al contrario, creo que hay mucha esperanza. Sería una tragedia si la gente continuara quedando fuera de las discusiones por ignorancia o negligencia; por el contrario, veo el despertar de los pueblos en todo lugar. Una vez ellos se dan cuenta que sus vidas están siendo directamente impactadas por las decisiones de unos pocos, el pueblo se alista para la acción.

Puede verse como preocupante el que haya tanto descontento en el mundo, pero es muy saludable que en todas partes del globo la gente desee quitarse de encima los superpoderes que piensan que ellos son tontos , o que no saben lo que les conviene.

Este es el mejor de los tiempos! Tan solo únase al diálogo y la acción.

As we look across the world we see so much suffering, so much despair, so much fear. We see it in Africa, in North Korea, and especially is the heat of the Middle East. And yet, as Zulma has said, there can be hope. We are in an age of exponentially growing change. That change is reflected in technologies that can drastically improve the human condition, whether through nanotechnology for medicine or through unprecedented world-wide communications between both friends and potential enemies. However, the same tools can bring catastrophic harm on a global scale if we don’t work together to resolve the problems that confront us.

Never before in human history has so much power rested in the hands of the people, wherever they live. Zulma has listed some of those actions. Granted, in countries such as North Korea, Sudan, and elsewhere there are pockets of tyranny. But history tells us that ultimately tyranny can be overcome by the power of the people. And today we mean the people globally, not just within the boundaries of individual countries.

Each of us needs to ask ourselves what we can do. My hope is that with the tools we have at our disposal such as web sites, blogs, podcasts, and streamed video we can collectively begin to move to peaceful resolutions of the problems these rogue governments have caused. We are all together on Spaceship Earth as Buckminster Fuller called our planet. It’s time we recognized that fact.

Our cover photo for this issue is of two young children in Seoul. My grandson was teaching English and these were two of his students. They represent our future as much as do the children in our families or in families next door. In actuality, we are all one big family that must work hard to solve our familial problems together. Let’s get on with the tasks before us.

Cuando miramos a través del mundo, vemos tanto sufrimiento, tanta desesperación, tanto temor. Nosotros lo vemos en Africa, en Corea del Norte, y especialmente en el calor del Medio Oriente. Y todavía, como Zulma ha dicho, puede haber esperanza. Estamos en una edad de cambio exponencialmente creciente. Ese cambio se refleja en las tecnologías que pueden mejorar drásticamente la condición humana, ya sea a través de la nanotecnología para la medicina o a través de comunicaciones mundiales sin precedentes entre amigos y enemigos potenciales. Sin embargo, las mismas herramientas pueden traer daño catastrófico a escala mundial si no trabajamos juntos para resolver los problemas que confrontamos.

Nunca antes en la historia de la humanidad ha estado tanto poder en las manos de la gente, dondequiera que ellos vivan. Zulma ha listado algunas de esas acciones. Permitida en países tales como Corea del Norte, Sudán, y otras partes, hay áreas de tiranía. Pero la historia nos dice que últimamente la tiranía puede ser vencida por el poder de la gente. Y hoy nos referimos a la gente globalmente, no solo dentro de las fronteras de países individuales.

Cada uno de nosotros necesitamos preguntarnos lo que podemos hacer. Mi esperanza es que, con las herramientas que tenemos a nuestra disposición, tal como sitios web, blogs, podcasts, y video corrido, podamos comenzar colectivamente a movernos hacia resoluciones pacíficas de los problemas que estos gobiernos dirijidos por dictaduras han causado. Estamos todos juntos en la Nave Espacial Tierra, como Buckminster Fuller llamó a nuestro planeta. Era tiempo de que nosotros reconociéramos ese hecho.

Nuestra cubierta muestra dos niños jóvenes en Seúl. Mi nieto enseñaba Inglés y éstos eran dos de sus estudiantes. Ellos representan nuestro futuro tanto como los niños en nuestras familias o en familias vecinas. En realidad, nosotros somos toda una gran familia que debe trabajar duro para resolver nuestros problemas familiares juntos. Dediquémonos a las tareas frente a nosotros.
