The year 2005 has come to an end and there are signs of hope in the horizon. In the midst of violence, the conscience of the world is awakening. Nature itself has contributed to alert us that matters are reaching a point of no return.
Instead of feeling defeated by the accumulation of sorrow and tragedies, we could look at the compassion and love shown every place where tragedy has hit the lives of people.
Even though bad times bring out the best and the worse in people, I believe that this year more individuals felt compelled to give a personal response to the suffering of others.
The war in Iraq has not stopped. The survivors from Katrina will be affected for many years to come. At this point the four missing CPT members continue to be captive. We could continue on and on about the many wrongs in today’s world.
Nevertheless, more and more people have organized themselves to protest about the war and its consequences. There is awareness now about the relationship between the ways of life in the North, and how that has affected the way of life, turning it into death in the South.
The need for more gas and oil makes us dependent of markets that are been controlled by military means. That way of oppression will eventually bring retaliation. This is a small-interconnected planet and only now we have started to realize what the indigenous people from several regions have known for centuries. For them, savage are the human beings who violate the laws of nature. We have not been very good students, but finally we are beginning to understand that talking about the environment is not enough. We have to look at our daily life with new eyes. We have to discover new ways of doing things and this year has been an opportunity to think and grow.
Katrina showed us how we had ruined the environment in such a way that it cannot be easily repaired. The lives of individuals who were hurt by the tragedy have also been broken by years of abuse and neglect. We suddenly realized that there were hurt people everywhere and we just did not know about it.
The caring acts at the time of Katrina’s tragedy have started an irreversible process of questioning a system that let situations like this happened. It is the same conscience that is asking now to stop the war and violence generated by the forces of globalization, accumulation and greed.
Therefore there is hope that the New Year 2006 will give us new sources of learning and growing.

A medida que llegamos al final del a? 2005, se ven en el horizonte se?les de esperanza. En medio de la violencia se est?despertando la conciencia del mundo. La naturaleza misma ha contribuido a alertarnos que estamos llegando a un punto de no retorno.
En lugar de sentirnos derrotados por la acumulaci? de dolor y tragedias, podemos mirar a la compasi? y el amor demostrados en todos los lugares donde la tragedia golpe?las vidas de la gente. Aunque los malos tiempos sacan lo mejor y lo peor de las personas, creo que en este a? hubo m? individuos que se sintieron impelidos a darle una respuesta personal a los que estaban sufriendo.

La necesidad que tenemos de m? gas y petr?eo nos ha hecho dependientes de los mercados que se encuentran controlados militarmente. Esta forma de opresi? eventualmente trae represalias. Este es un planeta peque? de m?tiples interconexiones y solo ahora nos damos cuenta lo que los ind?enas de varias regiones han sabido por muchos siglos. Para ellos, salvajes son aquellos seres humanos que violan las leyes de la naturaleza. No hemos sido buenos estudiantes y solamente ahora hemos empezado a comprender que no es suficiente tan solo hablar del medio ambiente. Tenemos que mirar nuestra vida diaria con nuevos ojos. Tenemos que descubrir nuevas formas de hacer las cosas y este a? ha sido una oportunidad para pensar y crecer.
Katrina nos mostr?como hemos arruinado el medio ambiente en forma tal que no se puede reparar f?ilmente y las vidas de los individuos lastimados por la tragedia tambi? se han roto por los a?s de abuso y negligencia. De repente nos dimos cuenta que hab? gente lastimada en muchos lugares y no lo sab?mos.
Los actos de preocupaci? y cuidado en el momento de la tragedia de Katrina han comenzado una acci? que no se detiene, de cuestionamiento de un sistema que permite que ocurran situaciones como esta. Es la conciencia misma que pide ahora que se detenga la guerra y la violencia generada por las fuerzas de la globalizaci?, la acumulaci? y la ambici?.
Por lo tanto hay esperanza de que el Nuevo A? 2006, nos dar?nuevas fuentes de aprendizaje y crecimiento.

Zulma has indicated that there is hope, that millions of Americans and others have become awakened to some of the problems that we have neglected to decades. Yet, the solutions possible bring with them additional problems. Centuries of colonialism has bred distrust and enmity among billions the world over. We can point to the end of colonialism, but have we broken the bonds of dependence between the developing world and the so-called developed countries in Europe, North America and parts of Asia? How can we forge a lasting peace without a sense of freedom among peoples wherever they live? Can democracy be foisted upon peoples, or is it something they have to work out themselves? What can our role possibly be?
Perhaps the answer to those questions lies within us right here. No, we can neither be nor should we be the missionaries of democracy to the rest of the world. But we can become a role model by cleaning up our own house and demonstrating that democracy can work, can meet challenges, can unite people. People united do not act violently toward one another. United people recognize the dignity and worth of each person and honor their differences.
The first place to begin is within our own neighborhoods, communities, states, and nation. Are we all ready to wage peace as earnestly as we have historically waged war? Our future lies in our answer.

Zulma ha indicado que hay la esperanza, que millones de Americanos y otros han despertado a algunos de los problemas que hemos descuidado a d?adas. Sin embargo, las posibles soluciones traen consigo problemas adicionales.
